Several problems encountered in various branches of engineering can be studied only by the methods of the Theory of Probability and Statistics. For instance in civil engineering the properties of construction metarials, hydrologic variables, traffic variables, and soil properties are all of random character and cannot be studied by a deterministic approach only. For this reason probability theory and statistics is being taught as a compulsory or optional subject in undergraduate engineering curricula.
